Parenting Strategies: Making Life Easier After Having a New Child

Parenting Strategies: Making Life Easier After Having a New Child

Kids are blessings, and they are adorable! Some cultures say that kids bring joy to the family and act as links to broken bonds.

Having a new child is a brand new and daunting chapter in anyone’s lives, and there are many additional responsibilities and duties in the family to fulfill.

Babies come with a lot of responsibility, especially if you have older kids in the house.

That’s why you need to hire a maid, and a qualified and reputable Singapore maid agency can help you with your search for house help.

Here are some parenting strategies that have worked for many working parents, not just in Singapore but in the APAC region.

Parenting Strategies

After giving birth, every parent is excited about going home, but you may not know where to start the moment you get to your house. That’s normal, especially if it’s your first child, and parenting is a new chapter.

With these parenting strategies for a new child, you can raise your baby confidently;

  • You should seek help because the first days are hectic for moms.

Many health consultants and lactation specialists can help you learn basics on how to hold, change diapers, burp, and general baby care tips.

Nurses can also help you with these tips, and you can pay to get a home care baby nurse. Get help from your relatives, especially sisters or in-laws, with experience in raising kids.

  • When handling your newborn, ensure that hygiene levels in the house are well maintained. Use hand sanitizers whenever visitors come to reduce the risk of baby infections.
  • Soothing and bonding are pleasurable for babies but ensure that you hold their head and neck area well. Through soothing, you build physical and emotional connections with your baby. While soothing the baby, you can stroke it using various patterns, and you can do this while feeding or cradling the baby. Massage your baby in case the kid has underlying medical conditions.
  • Sing to your baby and swaddle it gently because many kids are sensitive to sounds, touch, and light.
  • Change the diaper often because of new-borns dirty their diapers 10-12 times in a day. Ensure that all the supplies for changing the diaper are within reach. Use baby friendly ointments to prevent baby rash and ensure that your baby doesn’t stay with a dirty diaper to prevent rashes. You can let your baby stay undiapered at least once in a while to air out the skin. If your baby has a persistent skin rash, call your doctor.
  • Follow all the baby bathing basics from your doctor until the navel heals.
  • Follow the doctors feeding and burping tips.
  • Ensure that your baby gets enough sleep during the day because many babies sleep for fewer hours at night.
  • Hire a house maid using a Singapore maid agency, and get your peace of mind! Having older kids in the house and a new baby is hectic; that’s why it’s essential to get a house maid. Getting a maid through an agency is vital because they will be well trained, and all the paperwork will be handled!

A person who has experience in the relevant job can do it properly with minimum instructions. For example, an experienced maid would easily move an elder from a bed to a wheelchair without asking for help from others.

Cultural differences

Maids in Singapore come from different countries (Indonesia, Philippines, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, etc.) They are different because of the varying upbringings and cultures. It’s alright to have that difference, but when it comes to hiring a domestic helper, you need to be very careful.

Everything You Need To Know About Transfer Maids In Singapore

Everything You Need To Know About Transfer Maids In Singapore

Transfer maids are the ones who got much experience as compared to the new ones. Transfer maids are one of the types of maids category.

Such maids are high in demand as compared to the other ones. However, that doesn’t mean the employers do not hire other maids; it’s just people like to hire experienced and trained maids.

According to the stats, people prefer to transfer maids over the new ones. But it solely depends on the employer’s interest and the overall hiring process.

This article will discuss the main differences between the new maid and the transfer maid Singapore.

Working Years

Transfer maids are the ones who have already worked in Singapore. But the thing is they are just changing their employers due to some reason.

One of these could be employers are leaving the country, maids are not happy with the workload or maybe have changed mind after completing the contract.

However, this is not the case with the new maids. Those usually don’t have working experience and so looking for the job.

Experience

When it comes to transfer maids, one can have surety that the maid has some years of experience, as she is already working in Singapore. But this couldn’t be the case with the new maids.

New maids are fresh, enthusiastic about working, and probably have no work experience but looking to have the one in her country.

Interviewing

If you want to hire a transfer maid, then you can have a face-to-face interview with them.

However, this couldn’t be the case with the new maid. But you could find a maid agency in Singapore which allows you to have an interview with it.

However, you can find a couple of those but that too a telephonic or a skype interview, maybe not face-to-face. In such cases, most probably, the answers would be taught by the agency.

So, in the end, you would end up getting a maid who is not self-taught. In this case, you may want an experienced and trained maid only.

There may be those who wish to go for inexperienced maids in Singapore who can easily teach as per their requirements.

Pros & Cons Of Hiring A Transfer Maid

It’s good to hire an experienced, trained, and tested transfer maid as she would have years of experience. She is transferring from one employer, so chances would be higher to get new opportunities and work in a new environment.

Transfer maids could be verified about working qualities from the ex-employer.

But it too comes with a disadvantage. Working for so long can make a maid arrogant when it comes to ruling over her. Yes, most transfer maids Singapore wouldn’t feel it good if you try to rule them.

The reason for this could be experienced. Also, they would demand a higher salary, which may not be acceptable for many employers. So before going for a transfer maid, keep these points in mind.

Process Of Hiring A Transfer Maid

Here are some important hiring steps. If you perform these steps carefully, you can be assured to get an excellent transfer maid.

  • Research: This is the most important point to consider while looking for a transfer maid. If you don’t want to get in touch with a maid agency Singapore, you have to research a lot.

You can ask your friends and family who may have to get any transfer maid, or maybe they know someone through a social circle.

  • Websites: The next step is to explore reliable and professional websites. You can check special Singaporean forums where you can find authentic information about the maids. You can even put an advertisement for a transfer maid on any popular social media website.
  • Agency’s help: Getting professional assistance is always beneficial. You can get in touch with one of the best maid agencies. Such agencies have experience finding the best talent.

Three Necessary Steps To Follow While Hiring A Transfer Maid Singapore

  • The first step is visiting a reliable website searching for the transfer maid Singapore. However, it’s necessary to visit a professional and reliable website so that you can avoid any fraud.
  • The next step is to conduct an extensive interview and try to get all your confusion cleared. Only conduct interviews of those who you think are appropriate for the job.
  • The last step is to get a work permit for your maid for the foreign domestic worker on the Ministry’s site.

Undoubtedly, transfer maids are super high in demand because of their working experience and, of course, the skills. However, putting some effort could help you get a perfect transfer maid for your home who can stay with you for longer.

What Are The Employer Criteria For Hiring A Maid In Singapore?

What Are The Employer Criteria For Hiring A Maid In Singapore?

As capable as you are in managing your household, there are times when you need extra help to lift some of the household burdens off your shoulder – especially when you have to devote your attention to your job.

Unless you have family members who are willing to help out with the cleaning, cooking and childcare, chances are you’ll look for help from a maid agency in Singapore like Homekeeper to hire a domestic helper.

This comes as no surprise with increasing affluence and dual-income parents, leaving the management of household chores and childcare in the hands of capable strangers – resulting in higher dependence on foreign domestic helpers.

As of June 2020, there are 252,600 foreign domestic workers in Singapore compared to a decade ago with about 201,000 foreign domestic workers. With a growing economy and demanding workload, hiring a maid is no longer a privilege but a necessity.

However, you’ll have to bear in mind that hiring a foreign domestic worker comes with numerous responsibilities, not to mention your qualification. Before you can hire a maid, the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) will determine whether you qualify as an employer of a foreign domestic worker.

Ahead, we’ll be sharing the criteria that aspiring employers like you need to meet before they can hire a maid.

Main eligibility

For you to qualify as an employer of a foreign domestic worker, you must be 21 years old and above; not facing any bankruptcy, and have the mental capacity to understand your responsibility as an employer.

It’s crucial to remember that you’ll be responsible for another person’s well-being while they’re working for you. That said, the ministry will consider your financial ability when you submit your application to hire. This is to ensure that you’re capable of providing and caring for your foreign domestic worker in an acceptable situation.

Besides, hiring a foreign domestic worker will require you to prepare their work permit before they enter Singapore. Which means you’ll have to be prepared to bear the cost of hiring a foreign maid.

First-time employer

If it’s your first time hiring a foreign domestic worker, you’ve come to the right place. Before you can apply to hire, you’re required to attend an Employer Orientation Programme (EOP). Bear in mind that you’ll have to attend the programme two working days before submitting the work permit application.

Why do you have to attend the programme? Well, the 3-hour orientation programme is to help you understand your role and responsibilities as an employer of a foreign domestic worker, especially if you’ve replaced your maid more than three times within 12 months.

Besides, you can either take the programme in the classroom or online. But you should attend the programme in person to have a better understanding of your role and responsibilities as an employer of a foreign domestic worker in Singapore.

You’ll also have to bear the cost of the programme, which ranges from $35 to $60 for the classroom EOP, while the online EOP costs $35.

If you’re suffering from a chronic medical condition; physically incapable of attending the programme in person; a new or expecting mother, you may appoint a representative or sponsor to attend on your behalf. Be sure to retain the documents for at least three months for audit purposes.

Hiring a second maid

If you need to hire another maid to help manage your caregiving needs, the MOM will consider your application given that you have two children below 18 years old or a parent/parent-in-law who is over 60 years old.

The ministry will also assess your application based on your financial ability to hire and care for your maid in an acceptable situation.

Minimum income needed to hire a maid

Although your household income or monthly salary is part of the criteria, there isn’t any exact amount set by the MOM. Your application will be assessed based on the following application:

  • Combined Income – Married couples.
  • Joint Income Scheme – Your income and other immediate family member’s combined.
  • Sponsorship Scheme – Senior citizen, not earning an income, and not staying with any working adults.

This is to safeguard your potential maid’s well-being and upkeep while they’re working for you in Singapore.

Homekeeper can help with your household needs

If you’re looking to hire a foreign domestic helper within Singapore, Homekeeper has a database of domestic workers to choose from. You’ll be able to look through their biodata and key information of potential domestic helpers.

Helping Your Domestic Helper Improve Her Language Skills

Helping Your Domestic Helper Improve Her Language Skills

It is effortless to converse with someone when you understand each other’s language. If your domestic helper is from a different ethnicity or culture, language differences are expected. It would help if you allowed them to have adequate time to sharpen their language skills for effective communication.

When you understand each other well, miscommunication is unlikely to occur. A new language gives one unique opportunity to learn and understand new cultures. If you have children, your domestic helper needs to master your language since the children will interact with her daily for a long time.

1. Support her learning process

Help her practice her language skills

  • Practise makes perfect. To become proficient in something, you have to practice it for long. Domestic helpers in Singapore spend most of their time indoors. They have limited interactions with other people; therefore, it is difficult to practice their language skills.
  • Teach your helper one word per day. Review the vocabulary weekly and help her practice. Practice can be done by holding discussions on movies, articles, and everyday activities.
  • Encourage her to converse in the target language. Give her feedback on the performance. If she is slow to learn, do not display frustration.
  • Introduce her to new topics to help improve her vocabulary content. However, do not overwhelm her with too much at the same time.

Encourage her To Set Up Language Exchanges

  • Language exchanges will be great for her to improve new language. It can be an intimidating method, and therefore, you should first find out if she is comfortable with it.

Correct her mistakes: When she makes mistakes, correct her gently and explain it to her. She will then be able to improve her language skills.

Help her set goals: Goals help one to track their progress. She should set short and long term goals.

2. Give Them Access To The Right Tools

There are many tools for learning languages, both online and offline. Online is ideal for a domestic helper in Singapore who works from home and has limited contact with people outside the home. Utilize the available technological tools.

Vocabulary-learning apps

There are many online apps for vocabulary learning, some of them free. There have many exercises in different languages, such as English, Mandarin, and French. Such apps help you learn the basics of the target language. You can pick up vocabulary daily.

The apps are user friendly. They can be accessed using a laptop or phone and help the learner make many downloads.

Audio content

To learn a language, you must hear and speak it. That way, you experience pronunciations and intonations. The following platforms can be beneficial.

TuneIn

The platform allows users to access streams in many languages from radio shows world-wide. As a learner, you can decide on one recording, maybe of a podcast. Listen to it repeatedly and pick up new vocabulary.

YouTube

It is the largest platform for audio-visual content. You can listen to videos of a target foreign language and add subtitles.

Platforms For Comprehensive Language Courses

Many platforms have structured programs, depending on how complex the language level is.

  • Duolingo: It is a great beginner’s tool. It introduces you to the basics of a language. They offer 27 different languages. Some languages, such as English and Mandarin, are offered for free.
  • The Foreign Service Institute: It has a very comprehensive database of language courses. Some languages have audio resources. The content is free for users and is great for practicing how to read and write a foreign language.

Help your domestic worker in Singapore access reading materials

  • Encourage your domestic helper to research on diversified reading resources. For a beginner, she can start with children’s books. Over time, she will move to magazines, journals, books, and other enhanced material, as their knowledge expands.
  • Ensure that she read materials with content that interests her. The materials should be of her level, e.g., beginner, elementary, or advanced.

3. Sign Up Your Domestic Worker For A Language Course

If you want your domestic helper to be fluent in a language, you have to invest in a professional. Language classes help a learner have the focused attention of the tutor. Unlike online platforms or just reading, one can practice speaking the language with other students or tutors.

Additionally, one can improve their grammar, pronunciations, and intonations. A language class helps a learner discover the rationale behind it.

Training center

Homekeeper maid agency in Singapore collaborate with Aria Training & Consultancy to offer language classes for the domestic helpers in Singapore. Employers based in Singapore can register their domestic helpers for English and Mandarin class.

Elements To Remember

  • The experience of learning a new language is unique for everyone. There is no universal method. Additionally, there is no wrong or right way to do it. Just adapt the practices that work for you.
  • Each medium has its advantage. The advantage can favor some people, but not all.
  • The speed at which your domestic helper learns a new language depends on factors such as the learners’ personality and how many words they can speak.

This is true for the maids in Singapore who left their families to serve others.

Long-distance makes them feel disconnected from their families, and most of them try to keep in touch through social media, like Skype and Facebook.

Seizing her smartphone is not a good option, don’t you agree? This smartphone helps us to connect with her anywhere, anytime. So the best thing you could do is:

Let her set the social media usage limit for scrolling down on her news feed. This can be done by setting up an alarm. She can set an hour to contact her loved ones before sleeping.

2. Turn Off Notifications

We all crave checking notifications, who have commented on our post, what’s new in the news, and soon on. And so implies to your maids, they too like to check notification because it’s human nature. So what’s the best way to let her finish the job first?

Well, it’s simple! Just find out the settings on her smartphone and make your maid turn off the notifications.
This way, she can better focus on her chores without distractions. This could seem a bit rude, but it’s necessary. You can sit down with her and talk to her about your concerns.

3. Create Physical Distance Between You & Device:

This tip would actually help your maid to limit her smartphone usage. Instruct her to sleep without her cellphone. This habit will allow her to get a good night’s sleep, and she would be focused and get mindfulness without flashing notification light.

4. Indulge In Real Conversations With The New Families

This is very important for homeowners and maids. Often people hide in their rooms and refuse to make social contact with the maids.

Our suggestion is to try to be friendly with them, and so have a conversation. It’s helpful to bond with them in this way; they would feel welcomed and reduce her homesickness. Employers, it’s simple, you can talk to her during her training.

5. Call Instead of Social Media

Anyone could be addicted to social media because sites help us communicate with people instead of calling and messaging. However, this addiction could be overcome simply by switching from social media to calls.

Yes, someone from your maid’s family or friend circle wants to contact her, she could call her or call them instead of chatting with them over social media platforms.

This would work like magic, as this will let your maid understand the importance of time management.

6. Finding New Useful Hobbies

If your maid gets to agree to limit her internet usage, she would surely find herself getting bored in free time. The best way to overcome this situation is to find new hobbies.

These hobbies could be productive and full of fun.

For instance, you can teach her how to cook; it will improve her productivity. You can go for a gardening option. The maid can plant shrubs in beautiful pots, and much more options.

These are some amazing and useful tips for you to enhance your maid’s productivity and build a relationship with her.

It’s necessary to talk to your maid regarding her social media usage so that this way, you can convey your concern.

7. Delete Apps

If nothing works, then as a last option, she can delete some social apps from her smartphone. Specially those apps which keep her engaged.

For instance, Facebook, she could log in from the web if there is something important or need to check. It’s easy to control your device. This will work for your maid to keep focused on her job without distractions.

Guide To Getting A Work Permit For Your Maid In Singapore

Guide To Getting A Work Permit For Your Maid In Singapore

Are you overwhelmed by work to clean up your house? Do you need extra help to take care of your elderly parents or young children?

Chances are you need another person to help out with your house chores and take care of your family while you’re out earning money to provide for everyone in your household.

While it’s common for a household in Singapore to have a domestic helper, it can be quite tedious to deal with the paperwork when it comes to hiring foreign domestic workers.

Even then, the paperwork is an essential part of the hiring requirements to ensure that your maid is working for you legally and serves to safeguard their welfare by holding you liable for their employment.

Let’s face it. Dealing with the paperwork can be quite overwhelming as it requires a thorough understanding of the terms and conditions as well as the rules and regulations. It’s also time-consuming as you’ll need to get the approval from the Ministry of Manpower (MOM).

If you intend to hire foreign domestic workers to meet your household needs, you can either engage with a maid employment agency in Singapore like Homekeeper or DIY (Do-It-Yourself). Here’s what you need to know about getting a work permit for your maid.

Applying for a work permit for your maid in Singapore

If you hire a maid through an employment agency, they’ll deal with the paperwork on your behalf. But if you’re looking to apply for your maid’s work permit on your own, there are several steps you’ll need to follow before your prospective maid arrives in Singapore.

Before you submit the work permit application, you’ll need to get written consent from your maid to protect both you and your maid’s interests should a dispute arise. You can then apply either online or manually together with the $35 fee.

Note that it’ll take about a week to process your online application or three weeks if you submit the application form manually.

Once your application is approved, the ministry will email the in-principle approval (IPA) letter and declaration forms to be signed by you and your maid. If your maid isn’t in Singapore yet, you’ll need to send them a copy of the IPA for a smooth entry.

Before their entry, you’re required to get approval from MOM, purchase a security bond as well as medical and personal accident insurance for your maid. Once they enter Singapore, they’ll need to serve a 14-day Stay-Home Notice (SHN), after which you’re required to send them for a medical examination.

Upon completion of the SHN, you should request for your maid’s work permit and the ministry will issue a temporary work permit.

Valid for one month, you must hand the temporary work permit to your maid so that they can start work while waiting for the actual work permit.

The work permit will be delivered four working days after your maid’s documents are verified.

Renewing the work permit

Your maid’s work permit is valid for two years depending on the duration of the security bond. The ministry will send a renewal letter eight weeks before your maid’s work permit expires. You can renew the work permit online along with the $35 fee.

Before you can renew your maid’s work permit, you’ll need to get them a new security bond and extend their medical and personal accident insurance.

The process of renewing the work permit is similar to applying for a work permit but you’ll need to refer to the renewal letter for more detailed instructions.

Once your maid’s work permit is renewed, be sure to check the temporary work permit for instructions on whether you need to return or continue using the existing card.

The steps above seem simple but if you miss out on any, your maid won’t be able to enter Singapore and work for you. It pays to be thorough so check on every step of the application so that you’ll have the extra help you need.

Homekeeper can help with your household needs

If you’re looking to hire a foreign domestic helper within Singapore, Homekeeper has a database of domestic workers to choose from. You’ll be able to look through their biodata and key information of potential domestic helper.

Additionally, we’ll process the necessary documents for you and your helper-to-be. We’ll then provide maid pre-employment training to ensure that your helper-to-be meets your household needs.

Also, we have a new and upcoming service for busy employers and those who want to minimise going out during this pandemic. It allows employers to complete the entire process from start to finish at the comfort of their home. Please stay tuned!
